Voice now travels over 4G, with 5G widely deployed and standalone 5G led by EE.

The replacement is better for almost everyone, provided 4G Calling is switched on. Where a handset cannot support it, that device has reached the end of its life.
The 2025 consolidation
June 2025 combined Three and Vodafone into VodafoneThree, the largest UK operator by customer numbers, with substantial investment directed at mast consolidation across both estates.
The practical consequence is that coverage at a given postcode is moving more than usual, which makes an annual re-check more valuable than it has been for years.
