Important notice: keyanok is an independent information site. We are not a mobile network, and we are not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Three, O2, Sky Mobile, EE, Vodafone or any other provider. We do not sell SIM cards, contracts, handsets or services of any kind. Every comparison here is general guidance and opinion only — always confirm current details with the provider's own website or app before deciding anything.
Roaming — O2 vs everyone else
O2
Standard plans still include European roaming under a published fair-use ceiling — the only one of the four mast owners holding that position.
- Included on standard plans
- Ceiling historically near 25GB
- Worldwide passes by destination
VS
Three, EE and Sky
Most newer Three and EE plans apply a daily charge; certain higher EE tiers restore inclusive roaming through a pass. Sky sells daily passes by band.
- Daily fees on most current plans
- Exceptions exist by tier and plan age
- The app is the only reliable answer
Which wins, and for whomO2 wins outright for regular European travellers. For anyone who rarely leaves the UK it is worth nothing at all — which is exactly why it should not be the first thing you weigh.
Contract structure — O2 vs Three
O2
The split contract: handset and airtime on two separate agreements. The device element genuinely stops at repayment and can be settled early.
VS
Three
The standard combined bundle: one monthly figure covering both. When the term ends the figure does not reduce by itself.
Which wins, and for whomO2, comfortably — provided you use it. Both halves appear on the statement, which makes the arithmetic the easiest in the market to audit. Read both lines rather than the total, and reduce the airtime the moment the device clears.
Peak-time performance — O2 vs Three
O2
Broad national reach, but in congested urban centres between roughly five and seven in the evening throughput slows while signal bars stay full. Measurement firms have published this for years.
VS
Three
Faster average speeds in independent testing, with congestion less pronounced in city centres — though its own weakness is indoors rather than at rush hour.
Which wins, and for whomThree on peak-hour throughput; O2 on almost everything else in its favour. Test your own commute at six o'clock on a giffgaff or Tesco SIM before committing either way.

Three brands, one landlordTesco Mobile, giffgaff and Sky Mobile all transmit on O2's masts — so a rolling month with any of them tests O2 for pennies.
O2 at a glance
The operator began as BT's Cellnet, took the O2 name in 2002, and has formed half of Virgin Media O2 since 2021. It is also the market's largest wholesale landlord.

Careful: There is no “satellite activation fee”. The trials are operator-run and free; a fraudulent charge has been invented around them.

Score any plan on signal and total cost first, and treat perks as a decider between two acceptable options. A free coffee has never fixed a dropped work call.

Pay as you go
Standard credit-based service with no contract and no credit assessment. For regular users, giffgaff and Tesco Mobile on the identical masts usually cost less than O2's own prepaid rates — which makes prepaid best suited here to spares, first phones and coverage testing.
eSIM
Issued through MyO2, the website or retail premises in minutes, with broad flagship support. Wi-Fi Calling and 4G Calling are both mature and both worth enabling permanently since the 2025 3G withdrawal.
Number retention uses the ordinary free PAC text. Beyond Europe, an O2 line paired with a local data eSIM frequently beats worldwide daily passes even given O2's roaming advantage.
Careful: Every eSIM “transfer service”, “activation fee” or “migration charge” is fraudulent, on this and every other UK network.
Broadband and bundles
In this corporate family, home broadband means Virgin Media — cable and expanding full fibre. It is a question of whether your street is wired and has nothing to do with mobile signal at the same address.
Households pairing Virgin broadband with O2 mobile keep being offered bonus data or discounts, so price the pair rather than the parts. Where cable is unavailable, O2 mobile still works normally.

PAC to 65075 keeps your number; STAC to 75075 drops it. Free, returned within minutes, valid thirty days, with the airtime term charge and any device balance itemised before you commit.
Retention offers are lawful and occasionally good, but they cannot be a condition of receiving a code. Take the code first, then negotiate with it in hand — and escalate free to the Communications Ombudsman after eight weeks unresolved or on a deadlock letter.
