Who we are. Keyanok is an independent information and guidance service for United Kingdom mobile customers. We are not a mobile network. We have no affiliation with, endorsement from, appointment by or connection to Three, EE, O2, Vodafone, Sky Mobile, Tesco Mobile or any other provider, and no commercial arrangement with any of them. We do not sell, supply, arrange or broker SIM cards, contracts, handsets or services of any kind, and we take no commission. Everything on this site is general information; a provider’s own current terms always take precedence.

The facts

Rents signal from

Sits within
Sky UK, under Comcast
Known for
Banked data and monthly resizing

What it means for you

Sky Mobile never built a network. It buys capacity wholesale from O2 and sells it with retail machinery bolted on top — and that machinery is the most inventive in the market.

The consequence is simple and worth stating plainly: everything about reach, congestion and mast faults belongs to O2 and should be judged on O2’s information sheet. What belongs to Sky is price, features and how quickly new things arrive.

Signal and coverage

The facts

Whose map to check
O2’s
Congestion
Inherited in full
At very busy masts
Rented traffic can queue behind the landlord’s own
Cheapest way to test

Sky’s marketing on coverage
Describes O2’s network

What it means for you

Check O2’s coverage map at your postcode, not Sky’s promotional copy. You are buying that network’s footprint, its strengths and its early-evening slowdown in busy city centres, all inherited without modification.

One extra consideration applies to any brand renting capacity: when a mast is genuinely saturated, the landlord’s own customers can be given priority over rented traffic. In everyday use nobody notices, but it is worth knowing.

3

What you can buy

The facts

Signature feature
Data reserve — unused data banks
Reserve life
Historically up to three years
Plan resizing
Monthly, without penalty
Handsets
Separate device credit
Household sharing
Banked data passes between SIMs

What it means for you

Two mechanics set this apart, and no other UK operator combines them.

FeatureWhat it does
The data reserveUnused allowance banks instead of expiring
Monthly resizingMove your tier up or down each month with no penalty
Device creditIts own line; ends when the phone is paid; settleable early
Household sharingBanked data can be passed between SIMs on one account

Both only pay if you actually use them. Resize down in quiet months — with banking in place you lose nothing by doing it — and draw the bank down in heavy months instead of permanently upgrading. Today’s scheme rules live in the app; read the current version rather than trusting what was true two years ago.

Prepaid options are thin here. If prepaid is what you want, the landlord or another tenant brand serves it better.

The facts

Wi-Fi Calling

Cost

Check first
Your exact phone model

What it means for you

This is where renting shows. eSIM support came to Sky later than to the mast owners and still varies by handset, and Wi-Fi Calling support has historically trailed O2’s.

Confirm your exact model with Sky before ordering. Support on O2 does not imply support here — they are different companies working to different timetables.

  1. Open the official app — never a link someone sent you.
  2. Request the eSIM and follow the on-screen activation.
  3. Keep your number with the ordinary free switching code; digital and plastic are treated identically.
  4. For travel, add a cheap local data eSIM and leave your UK line for calls.
Watch thisNobody in UK mobile charges for issuing, transferring or reissuing an eSIM. If someone asks for money, that is the fraud. Forward the message to 7726, free.
5

Home broadband

The facts

Type
Openreach and full-fibre partners
Mast-based
No
Where value sits
Households taking TV and broadband too
Outside such a household
Cheaper brands sell the same signal
Affects mobile signal
No

What it means for you

Broadband in this group runs over fixed lines and has nothing to do with masts. What it does do is unlock the household discounts that are the real reason to be on Sky Mobile at all.

Outside a Sky household the arithmetic changes completely: giffgaff and Tesco Mobile sell identical O2 signal, usually for less, without the banking mechanics. Price it honestly before you decide.

6

Using it abroad

The facts

Roaming
Daily passes, by band
Switched on in
The app
Banked data abroad
Rules differ — read them first
Ceiling
Applies as everywhere
At sea
Outside all protection

What it means for you

Roaming works through daily passes chosen by geographic band and switched on in the app before you travel.

One extra step matters here: the rules on drawing banked allowance while abroad are not the same as at home. Read them in the app before you fly rather than assuming your reserve is available.

  1. Read your roaming screen before you book, and write the ceiling down as a number.
  2. Check the spend cap is on.
  3. Turn off automatic backups and app updates over mobile data.
  4. Past a few days away, buy a local data eSIM and keep the UK line for calls.
Watch thisFerries, cruise ships and some aircraft bill through satellite systems that sit outside roaming and outside your spend cap. Switch mobile data off before you board.
7

Data limits and ‘unlimited’

The facts

Unlimited at home
Genuinely unmetered
Tethering
Capped on some plan generations
Very heavy users
Briefly queued at busy masts
Abroad
Ceiling, then per-GB
Typical over-buying
Around double

What it means for you

On the phone, at home, unlimited means unlimited on all four mast owners. Three published conditions bend it, and every one is readable before you sign.

ConditionWhat it actually does
Tethering capLimits sharing data with a laptop on some plan generations
Traffic managementQueues extreme outliers at saturated masts; normal heavy use never notices
Fair use abroadEnds the unlimited part at a published figure

Before buying any allowance, read three months of real usage in your current app. People routinely buy about twice what they use. Two free changes usually remove the need for a bigger tier: drop streaming quality one notch, and push backups and updates onto home Wi-Fi.

8

What it costs, monthly and yearly

The facts

Tier charge
Resizable monthly
Device credit
Separate line, ends at repayment
Household discounts
Where the value concentrates
Reserve balance
Check it is being used
Spend cap
Free

What it means for you

Two lines again — tier and device credit — plus whatever household discount applies.

FigureWhat to make of it
Tier chargeJudge after any discount; remember you can resize it monthly
Device creditTemporary by design; can be settled early
Household discountThe main reason this network is worth its price
Reserve balanceYou are paying for banking — check you are actually using it
Yearly figureBoth lines × 12, minus household discounts
9

When the price changes

The facts

Mid-term rises
Stated in pounds and pence before signing
Rule since
January 2025
Most common rise
A discount quietly ending
Falls
Only when you act
Escalation
Free at eight weeks

What it means for you

Bills go up for five reasons, all of them printed before you signed:

ReasonBehind it
A mid-term increaseDisclosed in pounds and pence at the point of sale since January 2025
The introductory discount endingIts length was stated when you bought
Going past your allowanceOnly possible if no spend cap was set
A minimum term endingNot a rise — a fall that did not happen
An add-on renewingOne-off purchases sometimes repeat

And down for five, none of which happen by themselves:

MoveEffect
Switch to SIM-only when the term endsStrips out the phone payment
Cut the allowanceIf three months of usage says the tier is too big
Buy a one-off add-on instead of upgradingCovers one heavy month without repricing the year
Haggle with rival quotes in handGet the PAC first, so you are choosing rather than asking
LeaveThe exit cost is itemised before you commit

The saving unique to Sky is resizing the tier down in a quiet month. Because unused allowance banks rather than evaporating, resizing down costs you nothing — which is as close as this market gets to paying only for what you use.

The app and your account

The facts

One login covers
TV, broadband and mobile
Value to a criminal
High
Written support
Yes
Reserve managed in
The app
Genuine offers appear
Only inside the app

What it means for you

A single Sky login opens television, broadband and mobile together. That makes it far more valuable to a criminal than an ordinary phone account password, and it deserves the same care you would give a banking login.

  1. Install it on day one and set the spend cap while you are in there.
  2. Give the account a password you use nowhere else.
  3. Switch on every extra protection offered.
  4. Only ever install from the official app store.
Watch thisReal offers exist inside the app. If a caller’s deal is not there, the call is not real — regardless of caller ID or what they seem to know. No genuine employee of any network ever needs you to read out a one-time code.

When the network plays up

The facts

Wi-Fi Calling
Second fix
4G Calling
Then
Ten seconds of airplane mode
Then

If it repeats
Two weeks of written records

If the same problem keeps returning, write it down for a fortnight — dates, times, what failed — then complain in writing with the log attached and ask what goodwill applies to the recorded period. Credits get agreed on evidence.

Report every fault to Sky, never to O2. Sky raises infrastructure problems with the landlord internally, and O2 will not deal with you directly about a Sky account.

Transfer time
Usually one working day
Escalation
Free at eight weeks

What it means for you

Joining. Check coverage before price. Buy the new plan, text your old network for the code, hand it over, and leave the old SIM in until the number moves — usually the next working day, with no gap.

Leaving. Two text messages. No conversation is required and none can be demanded.

TextToResult
PAC65075Your number moves to the new network
STAC75075Account closes, number given up
The reply—Lists any exit charge and phone balance before you commit

Your network cannot refuse the code, sit on it, attach conditions, or insist you speak to retentions first. Complain in writing if it goes wrong, keep the reference, and escalate free to the Communications Ombudsman at eight weeks or on a final response.

A single household bill makes leaving feel heavier than it is. The text messages work identically whether you take one Sky service or five.

Verdict

Works well for

  • Households already taking Sky TV or broadband
  • People whose data use swings month to month
  • Anyone who will actually resize their plan
  • Families sharing banked data across SIMs
  • People who want device payments that genuinely stop

Works badly for

  • Anyone taking no other Sky service
  • People who want the newest features on day one
  • Prepaid users
  • Anyone unwilling to check handset support first
  • People who will never touch the resizing controls

In one line: the cleverest retail features in UK mobile, on somebody else’s network — excellent inside a Sky household, ordinary outside one.
